Protests Continue and a New Front Opens

The protests continue in Madison. The Koch Brothers (the billionaire would-be strip miners of state assets) opened a lobbying office across from the Capitol which struck many as odd, since they already have the Governor’s office. Today, their office will be the focus of protests.

I’ve been at work helping Union Cab form its response as well as simply focusing on my job–it really hasn’t been easy. However, thanks to WORT-FM and the social media, it has been easy to keep up. Today, for instance, their was an attempt/rumor that the government would use health concerns to clear the Capitol.  The source appeared to be a family center that was set up. Of course, since many of the people protesting for their rights are health-care workers (SEIU), they were quickly able to call in health inspectors and work to keep the area clean and sanitized.

In the report on WORT-FM, the reporter noted that the Capitol has mice. Allen Ruff, the host of the show quickly noted “I hear that there are also a lot of rats in there too.”

Unions are planning a larger rally on Saturday.

More importantly, the Governor has called for special elections for three Assembly seats. These are to replace GOP representatives that moved into his cabinet. These are considered “safe” seats, but it will be the first time to be able to test how this battle has changed the political landscape.

The seats are:

60th District–Port Washington, Grafton, Cedarburg

83rd–Waterford, East Troy, Muskego, Mukwonago

94th–La Crosse, Onalaska,

A primary will be held on April 5th if needed, otherwise the general election will be in May. This is the first chance to push this fight onto the ballot. In addition to the recall, this needs to be a focus.
